The new zones, planned for
sites in Cheshire, Essex, Cornwall, Gosport, Hereford and the Humber estuary,
will offer businesses cheaper business rates, superfast broadband and more
relaxed planning controls.
They will join existing
zones in Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Manchester,
Nottingham, London, Derby, the Tees Valley, the West Country, the North East
and the west of England.
The zones are expected to
generate up to 30,000 new jobs in the surrounding areas by 2015, particularly
in manufacturing and new technologies, as the government focuses on stimulating
these sectors. "It is vital that we create balanced economic growth across
the country," said Chancellor George Osborne, announcing the zones.
"For too long there has been an over-reliance on the City and it is time
for us to help every part of the country to grow and realise its
potential."
